Agile Works, But…
Agile product development is a great solution for handling product complexity at the team level. Get a cross-functional team together, point them at the highest-priority work, build in feedback loops and continuous improvement. It’s hard to beat for smaller scale product development in contexts like software where the cost of iteration is low.
Unfortunately, a decade of clumsy attempts at scaling agile and making it fit into traditional organizations has many leaders thinking, “Agile is dead,” or “Agile won’t work here,” or “Agile is sprints and Jira stories, right?”

- Traditional project management promises control but collapses when emergence breaks the plan.
- Agile delivery embraces change but often lacks the structure stakeholders need for long-term planning.
Attempts to blend the two usually stack their weaknesses instead of their strengths. “Hybrid Agile” often means waterfall with standups or Agile teams drowning in upfront planning. You can be that trusted advisor. Your Certified CAPED Consultant journey begins with a highly-interactive 4-day in-person workshop.
The first two days are Days 1 & 2 of CAPED Practitioner, in which you’ll learn how to:
- Distinguish between complex and complicated work and explain the appropriate approach for each.
- Use the Humanizing Work Complexity-Aware Planning, Estimation, & Delivery (CAPED) approach to experience the benefits of both agile and traditional project management.
- Use a 3-level planning system to balance big-picture and detailed planning in a complexity-aware way.
- Make forecasts that account for risk and complexity so you can find the sweet spot between over- and under-planning the future.
- Structure teams and their work to scale beyond the work of one team in a way that avoids churn and rework.
Days 3 & 4 dive into the essential skills to help an organization get started with CAPED, including:
- Essentials of interactive, brain-based training so you can deliver the CAPED Practitioner course effectively
- How to facilitate a working session to identify and address the highest-priority impediments to adopting CAPED in a particular organizational context
- How to reliably identify the core complexity of any big initiative so Active Planning focuses on the right thing
- How to decide between linear and iterative CAPED variations
- How to do Reference Class Forecasting from scratch
- Engaging resistance as a resource
- Designing org change experiments
Exams & Certification
After passing the CAPED Practitioner and CAPED Consultant exams, you’ll be eligible for the Certified CAPED Consultant designation.
