What Makes a Team a Team?

Many so-called teams aren’t really teams. They’re groups of people doing related work, who have meetings together. Maybe you’re on one of those “teams.” You sit through status meetings where everybody shares how busy they are, but the updates don’t really change anything for anyone else in the room.

So, what makes a team a real team?

We define a team as a group of people with a meaningful shared purpose that they have to collaborate to achieve. Just doing related work or having the same boss doesn’t make a group a team. Collaboration around a shared purpose does.

In this popular Humanizing Work Show episode, we look at the research around effective teams and share the six conditions necessary for teams to really thrive.

Check it out (and maybe pass it along to your manager if your team could use a bit more of those six conditions).
